Gordon was born with heart defects, the extent of which were found out in his early twenties when he had an Xray with a mobile unit.
He underwent major surgery in 1957 which sustained him for 13 years, in
which time he worked for Wallpapers Stores Ltd, progressing from shop assistant to manager at their Barnstable shop and then to Group Manager in their West Region.
He was transferred to the Solent Region in 1969, but his health broke down and he died from a heart attack following major surgery.
