Albert Judd was born, at 6 a.m. on January the 9th at Money Hills, Ower, Eling.
In the 1851 census, he was living at Emery Down in the New Forest, aged 9, and was a scholar.
He had one elder brother and two younger, as well as a younger sister Emmie.
Aged 27 he married Frances Mary Ann Eastman, at the Parish Church in Shirley, Southampton, Hants. on October 23rd. 1870.
They were both single. Albert's occupation was stated to be a Farm Labourer, residing at Titchfield. in the County of Southampton.
The witnesses were Alexander Hunt possibly, the maternal Uncle, of Frances and the groom 's sister Emma Judd.
They all signed their own names.
At the Baptism of his son George James on February 9th 1873, at Sarisbury Church, Albert is described as a Labourer of Curbridge. Hants.
One of the local policemen was called William Farley, and there was a Blacksmith , at Sarisbury called Stephen Boyes. By this time Albert's father Christopher, had been admitted to the workhouse near Park Gate, a victim to "Senile Decay"
In 1876 another son was born, Albert Francis, the namesake of both his parents and in the Autumn of 1978, Charles arrived.
Tragedy was to follow in the following Spring, when little Albert, who was only three, succumbed to the complications of measles and died on May 30th 1879.
Albert was then a labourer working at a railway.
In the 1881 Census Return, Albert his wife Frances Mary Ann and their seven year old son Harry were living at Curbridge, Titchfield Hampshire. Albert was a 38 year old,General Labourer amd Harry was a scholar. They had a visitor staying, namely Albert's widowed,70 year old mother in law Mary Ann Eastman.
In the 1891 Census, Albert described himself as an Agricultural Labourer. He was 48, the same age as his wife. He had been born at Ower and Frances at Millbrook. The family were living at 10 Grange View,
Botley Rd. Hedge End Southampton.
Their son Harry was a 17 year old Grocer's assistant, born at Curbridge. They were living quite near to the Horse and Jockey "Pub" in Curbridge Road, occupying four rooms. His mother Betsy aged 81 was living next door but one, and had two rooms.
Albert first submitted his pedigree, to claim a pension by consanguinity, from the Charity of John West and Frances his wife, just prior to March the 11th. 1893, when he was 50. At the time Albert made the claim, the Pension was 5 annually, paid half-yearly.
In response to a letter from the local vicar, the Reverend Peirson, the Clerk of Christ's Hospital indicated that there was pressure on the available places. [21st September 1893]
Albert re-applied on April the 4th. 1894, but remained unsuccessful.
By the October, of 1906, he was awarded an annual pension of five pounds from the Trustees of the charity.
On the fifth of April 1910, Albert's Right to the Pension was extended for three years, payable in Half yearly installments.
Albert died at home,10 Grange View, Botley Rd.Hedge End, County of Southampton, on January 29th.1929.
He had retired from his work as an agricultural labourer, and succumbed to his chronic bronchitis.
There is a rather poor snapshot of the couple, which may have been taken in the summer of 1928.
His 49 year old daughter in law,"Lottie"was present when he died. Albert's death was certified by Alfred S. Peru M.R.C.S.
She registered the death two days later.
Subsequently Lottie, took Frances, her Mother in Law to live with her, and her own father, George Thomas Blake.
Albert Judd was buried aged 86, on February the 2nd. 1929, at St. John's Churchyard Hedge End.
The Clerk of Christ's Hospital [T.E. Limmer] was informed of his death, and responded that "the whole of the pension thus vacated will be paid to some other qualified person, to be elected, in due course, in room of the deceased. The Governors have no power to make any grant to the late Pensioner's Representatives for or towards funeral expenses, or for any other purpose."
Frances Mary Anne was the daughter of George Eastman, a Blacksmith of Shirley, Southampton and his wife Mary Anne [nee Hunt] She was born on the 14th. of September 1842 and baptised in the Parish of Millbrook. Southampton. on October 16th 1842.
On her 23rd Birthday, she was given a tiny Religious book, titled "The Faithful Promiser". It contained a meditation for each day of the month.
It is inscribed, "Frances M.A.Eastman. Given to her by her only Sister on her 23rd Birthday September 14th 1865"
Aged 28 she married Albert Judd a Farm Labourer of Titchfield. in the County of Southampton, on October 23rd. 1870.
The witnesses were Alexander Hunt possibly, her maternal Uncle, and the
groom 's sister Emma Judd.
They all signed their own names.
Their eldest child Harry born the 24th. of March 1874 was the only child out of four boys to survive, so they must have had a very sad time of it.
Albert was in failing health in his latter years, with chronic bronchitis.
After he died Frances went to live with her son Harry and daughter-in-law,
Lottie, at "Wenlock" Channels' Farm Road, in Swaythling. Southampton.
Also living there was Lottie's father George Blake.
Apparently, this was not a happy arrangement, with the two older members
fighting like cat and dog!
At the age of 88, Frances fell and broke her hip, subsequently developing
pneumonia, which proved fatal. An inquest was held, on August 27 1931.
Frances Mary Ann Judd was buried from "Wenlock" Channels Farm Rd. aged 88 on August the 29th. 1931.
